OCP exhibits at new “Business Imaging Expo 2013” in Las Vegas

am .

As we all see a steady regression of trade shows around the globe it was quite surprising to hear about the Recharger Magazines plans to come up with a successor show of the World Expo. During Paperworld / RemanExpo 2013 we have been informed by the Recharger Magazine that they would make it all new, changing the topic from an imaging supplies show to a show dedicated to all facets of the office technology industry.

You will agree that our industry changed during the last years, for sure by multiple reasons.  One reason is that the office environment changed. “Business Imaging Expo” is said to bring together the world of business process optimization, enterprise content management, documents printing and managed IT on an Expo show floor and during educational sessions with speakers addressing topics related to these segments.

We believe that the “Business Imaging Expo” can become an interesting platform for our industry with its new concept and want to take part.

We decided that OCP USA will exhibit at “Business Imaging Expo 2013” in the Mandalay Bay Convention Center from December 11th-12th.

If you or the one or other of your customers have planned to go to Las Vegas to see this new exhibition then we would be more than happy to welcome you or your customers at our booth # 419.

ETIRA salutes German police seizing patent-infringing clones at remanexpo

ETIRA salutes German police seizing patent-infringing clones at remanexpo

During the 2013 remanexpo show, several Asian companies exhibiting illegal non-OEM cartridges were raided
by German customs services. As reported in various trade magazines, companies Ninestar and Uniplus
Technology saw a number of their products confiscated by the German officers on account of infringements of
OEM patents.

ETIRA fully endorses these raids: selling patent-infringing newbuilt cartridges is a criminal offense, and resellers
and distributors should not buy these products if they want to stay out of court and avoid bankruptcy. And it's
also anti-social behaviour: these Asian cartridges typically pollute the European environment as they are not
remanufactured (that would be just as illegal as building them) nor recycled. So they are simply thrown away
after 1st use, resulting in unnecessary extra landfill in Europe. Any European company caring about
sustainability and it's overall image, should only buy remanufactured OEM cartridges.

ETIRA also welcomed the recent similar actions by HP in Poland. After HP's successful 2012 lawsuits against
the unfair importers/traders in Spain, HP now also took on the sales of patent-infringing newbuilts in Eastern
Europe. In Spain many illegal cartridges are no longer available, and the sellers are bankrupt. In Eastern
Europe this will happen too.

You too can help OEM’s to identify companies selling patent-infringing newbuilts: please report them to
the respective OEM’s at Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein!, Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! the products involved. If you want to report anonimously via ETIRA please use Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein!.">Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein!.

Keeping Ink Quality constant in an Ever-Changing Inkjet Market

am .

By Hasan Bagli – OCP GmbH

inktechThe ongoing development of inkjet technology and steadily growing printing volumes in companies and private households continuously increase the requirements for aftermarket Inks. The demand of the aftermarket industry get more and more specific and complex, so technical expertise and practical experience are essential to the long term success of each recycler as for the industry as a whole.

ln the early days, cartridge technology was less complicated. During that time, recyclers were able to fill any ink into existing tank cartridges without worrying whether the ink would come out of the print head. Over the years, cartridge technology improved rapidly, and nowadays the technology can change from year to year, even from month to month. Some factors that challenge ink manufacturers on a daily basis:

  • Changed shape of cartridges
  • Tank as well as foam cartridges
  • Differing physical and chemical parameters of foams
  • Filters above certain print heads
  • Increased nozzle amounts
  • Decreased drop size
  • Dramatic acceleration of print speed
  • OEM use of dye based, black pigment and color-pigment inks

It’s no longer enough to know how to develop an ink. The functionality and technology of a cartridge has to be fully understood to develop an ink that will compete with the OEMs.
This fact forces recyclers to keep pace and offer consumers a real alternative to OEM products. Therefore, the utmost modern state-of-the-art equipment is necessary when producing aftermarket inks, such as image analyzing systems, particle size measurement methods, Sun Testers, lR, UV-Vis, contact angle measurement devices, and various 3-D microscopes that allow magnification of the print head interior.

The three main factors necessary in the past for a recycler to produce a good quality product would have been easily summarized as follows:

1. Quality of empty cartridges
2. Quality of refilling equipment
3. Quality of ink

Nowadays the order of importance has turned upside down:

1. Quality of ink
2. Quality of refilling equipment
3. Quality of empty cartridges

Within the remanufacturing industry there are many filling methods practiced, such as hand filling, semi-automatic filling, fully automatic filling and CISS systems.

These methods, in conjunction with wet of dry foams, have lead to an ability to fill to the OEM gross weight without having to compromise print quality and success rates. The right ink from manufacturers using pioneering technology and measurement parameters designed and developed to meet the exact requirements given by an OEM ensures perfect performances and process properties across a wide production process spectrum. Even fill quantities that exceed the OEM fill are possible with the right ink. This achievement adds value to the product and satisfies the consumer.

Two of the most sensitive parameters for inkjet ink designs are surface tension and viscosity. They are the most important inseparable rheological properties of an ink.

Surface tension influences the wetting behaviour of the ink on the paper and inside the cartridge. It affects the edge sharpness, penetration of ink into print media, primary diffusion, optical density, colour metric and colour gamut, and ink flow inside a cartridge.

Viscosity is roughly the thickness of substances (liquids, gases). It defines and characterizes the inner frictional resistance regarding flow processes (dynamic and kinematic viscosity). Along with surface tension, Viscosity influences the penetration of an ink into a print media, affects edge sharpness and controls the ink flow in a cartridge (foam) as well. Too high viscosity may block the ink flow completely and cause ink starvation.

In addition to changing technology, the expectations and perceptions of the consumer when buying an alternative product have changed as well. In the past, the consumer was satisfied if the text printed black rather than gray and the print cartridge is reliable and saved money. Today, the average consumer is no longer happy with a simple standard print. The OEM’s have conditioned consumers to expect better performing printers and an improved output. The internet, digital cameras and mobile phones with cameras have created an environment where inkjet printers are nearly as common at home as TV’s or coffee makers. Consumers call on inkjet printers to complete tasks associated with work or print their photos at home. With this increased sophistication, consumers expect more of their printouts, whether printed with OEM or aftermarket products. When the consumer buys a printer, the first cartridge provided is an OEM, thereby setting the performance standard.

The target of recyclers has to be persuading the consumer to buy a recycled product rather than an OEM cartridge. If the consumer buys a recycled product that does not at least match the performance of the OEM product, even though it saves money and the environment, he will probably switch back to OEM. Thus, the philosophy of today’s recyclers has to be competing with the performance of OEM products by using an ink that fulfills the requirements. Recyclers saving on ink cost may experience a short term gain in reduced cost per cartridge, but fail to meet ever-increasing expectations of consumers. This will result in a long-term loss for the recycler and for the whole industry. Competing only by price, not by quality, prevents the aftermarket inkjet industry from moving forward. Filling a pigment cartridge with a dye based ink in the past may have been enough to satisfy consumers, offices and home users, but today it is definitely not enough. Pigment inks outperform dye-based inks by far. In offices, inkjet competes with laser, and only pigment inks can compete in optical densities and sharpness. However, not all pigment inks are created equal and merely choosing a pigment ink is not enough. Factors such as optical density, drying time, intercolor bleeding properties, highlighter resistance and print quality as a whole must be properly evaluated before choosing a formulation.

Furthermore, it is not enough to produce an ink that perform well today but does not maintain its characteristics tomorrow. The stability of the used dispersion is a key factor for the long-term stability of the ink. Most pigment dispersions available in the market consist of polymers and surfactants to stabilize them. These attached molecules keep the pigments pending in the dispersion, for stabilization, but the polymers is effectively binding the pigments and have the tendency to dry and adhere to the cartridge when first refilled. Pigment inks which pigments are electrostatically charged are stabilized by molecule groups chemically and permanently bonded to the pigment surface; therefore they do not have the drying problems of polymeric dispersed pigment based inks. The charged stabilizing groups attached to the pigment surface also function as binders upon drying, but only when making contact with the paper. The groups attached to the pigment surface, when not in contact with paper, combine well with water and other components of the ink vehicle. In the print head, even if drying occurs, these types of inks are easily able to be redispersed. It is similar to a dye ink that use the above described electrostatic stabilization technology, except with the ability to achieve significant improvements in print performance properties such as line clarity, optical density, intercolor bleeding properties, waterfastness and lightfastness.

This short insight to the challenges of an ink manufacturer helps us see how both recyclers and ink manufacturers can work together to help the industry move forward and increase market share of alternative inkjet cartridges by providing a product that competes in quality with OEM products.

New OCP inks for HP 950 / 951 cartridges available

am .

HP 950After finishing extensive tests, OCP is the first aftermarket company worldwide who releases new inks for HP 950 / 951 cartridges.

To ensure achieving the best possible printing results, OCP just uses the best raw materials because HP again is using pigment inks in the black and in the colour of their new HP 950 / 951 cartridges like they already did in the former released HP 940´s.

These cartridges are only used in HP Officejet Pro 8100 / 8600 series until now but from our experience further printer models will follow.

The HP Officejet Pro 8100 and the Officejet Pro 8600 are equipped with a permanent printhead using four individual cartridges. In both printers the resolution is declared up to 4800 x 1200 dpi, where borderless printing is possible. Beside the USB 2.0 interface, the printers are able to print up to 20 black pages / minute and up to 16 coloured pages / minute. The HP Officejet Pro 8600 additionally is equipped with a LCD colour screen. The LCD is available in 6,75cm - 10,92cm, depending on the printer model version.

OCP inks for Epson L800 available – first OEM photo printer with CISS (Continous Ink Supply System)

am .

After finishing the development, OCP´s Research & Development department released new inks for Epson L800.

With the L800 Photo Printer Epson developed an alternative system to the previously used CISS’s which could be installed in most of the common Epson printers.

Every 70ml bottle of the OEM ink comes with a 13-digit code which shall ensure its authenticity. Before the customer can start printing he has to fill the tanks with ink and type the code into the printer menu. Retail pricing for each bottle is designated with US$ 10.90 = approx. 155.71 US$/kg.
