New HP Photosmarts are carrying totally new printhead and cartridge design –
astounding similarities to Canons Pixma technology!

With the Photosmart D5460, D5463 and D5468 HP released 3 new MFPs in the low-cost segment. With a completely overworked printhead and cartridge design, we believe that HP wants to compete with Canons low-cost MFPs.

But having a closer look, this “new development” looks as if it was not really something new. Especially the printhead and the single ink cartridges are looking very similar to the ones Canon is using in their very sucessful Pixma MFP printers.

Key features of the new HP Photosmarts printers are:

Number of Colors          5 (Pigment Black and BK/C/Y/M dye-based inks)
Printing Technology       Bubble-Jet (permanent printhead with single ink cartridges)
Max. Mediasize            A4 / Letter
Duplex printing              No
Remarks                      Resolution up to 9600 x 2400 dpi, direct CD/DVD printing, USB interface
pages/min. black           33
pages/min. color           31

The new types of cartridges are:

Taking a closer look to the printhead, it is becoming obvious, that HP is for the first time working with different droplet sizes. Therefore the printhead carries two nozzle rows per color, one which produces
5.2pl droplets, the other one creates droplets of 1.3pl.

Big similarities to Canons technology can be found within the new HP single ink tanks. They are containing a tank and a sponge part, carry a prisma and also a chip, so everything quite similar to the Canon PGI-5 and CLI-8 cartridges. The biggest difference is, that the chip is placed on the bottom of the ink tanks and not as at the Canon ones on the back of the cartridge. It should be mentioned, that the applied chips seem to have nothing in common with Canons PGI-5 and CLI-8 chips as they look similar to the ones used with already known HP cartridges, such as the No. 02, 363, 177,801 series.

The 3 printers are available from now on at an approx. street price of 99,99$, cartridges are available at  prices between 9,99$ (SC black and color), 14,99$ (HC color) and 26,99$ (HC black).

Our R&D department already started to develop equivalent OCP inks for this cartridges.
